The Hunkar youth rally of Jignesh Mevani, for whom police refused permission, took off today from Connaught Place in Delhi, surrounded by police and paramilitary troops. Nearly 15,000 security agents armed with water cannons, tear gas and riot gear were stationed in the heart of the nation’s capital to thwart rallies and keep the peace. Describing the situation as “unfortunate”, Mevani said the government was “targeting” him. Last week, a case was filed against the 37-year-old activist lawyer in the aftermath of caste clashes near Pune that spread and affected parts of Maharashtra for three days.
