Playing the national anthem in movie theaters is no longer obligatory. The Supreme Court said Tuesday, a day after the government asked him to review his October 2016 order, in which he forced Jana Gana Mana to inculcate “committed patriotism and nationalism.”

Reiterating that citizens must respect the national anthem, the trial court ordered a committee set up by the government to take into account all aspects of the issue. The SC also noted that, regardless of the government’s decision, citizens with a developmental disability will be exempted from standing when the anthem is played.
